Le concept — Four key structures for introducing yourself

Each structure uses a different verb with a specific pattern. Understanding why helps you remember the form.

💡 The four structures

1

Je m'appelle… (Name)

s'appeler is a reflexive verb. The reflexive pronoun (me → m') changes with the subject. The stem doubles the l in most forms: j'appell-e.

2

J'ai … ans (Age)

French uses avoir (to have) for age, not être (to be). J'ai quinze ans = I am fifteen years old. The word ans (years) is always included.

3

Je suis + nationalité (Nationality)

être + nationality adjective. No article! The adjective agrees with gender: Je suis français (m) / Je suis française (f). Lowercase in French.

4

Il y a … personnes (Family)

Il y a = there is / there are. Fixed expression — never changes. Il y a 4 personnes dans ma famille.
