💡
Le concept — The ne…pas sandwich

In French, negation wraps around the conjugated verb: ne before it, pas after it.

💡 The negation rule

1

The sandwich: ne … pas

Place ne before the conjugated verb and pas after it. The verb is "sandwiched" between the two negative words.

Je suis français.
→ Je ne suis pas français.

2

Elision: ne → n'

When the verb starts with a vowel or silent h, ne shortens to n' (elision).

J'ai quinze ans.
→ Je n'ai pas quinze ans.

3

Reflexive verbs: s'appeler

With reflexive verbs, ne/n' comes before the reflexive pronoun.

Je m'appelle Marie.
→ Je ne m'appelle pas Marie.

4

Il y a → Il n'y a pas de

The fixed expression il y a becomes il n'y a pas de in the negative. Note: de replaces the article or determiner (un, une, des, du, de la) — not the number itself.

Il y a un chat dans ma famille.
→ Il n'y a pas de chat dans ma famille.

💬 In real life

In spoken French and text messages, the ne is often dropped entirely. You will hear and read this constantly:

Written (formal) Spoken / informal
Je ne suis pas français.Je suis pas français.
Il n'y a pas de frères.Y'a pas de frères.
Je n'ai pas de sœurs.J'ai pas de sœurs.

At A1, always write the full ne…pas. But recognise the informal version when you hear it.
