Le concept — Three irregular verbs

These three verbs are the most important in French. They are all irregular and must be memorised.

💡 Why they're special

s'appeler

Reflexive verb. The reflexive pronoun changes with each person. The stem doubles the l in most forms: appell-. Exception: nous/vous keep single l.

être

Completely irregular. No predictable pattern. Must be memorised: suis, es, est, sommes, êtes, sont. Used for nationality, profession, characteristics.

avoir

Irregular. Used for age (J'ai 15 ans), possession, and as an auxiliary. Forms: ai, as, a, avons, avez, ont.
