Le concept — Yes/no questions

There are three ways to ask a yes/no question in French. You also need to know when to answer si instead of oui.

💡 Three ways to ask yes/no

1

Rising intonation ↗ (most informal)

Take any statement and raise your voice at the end:
Tu es français ? · Tu habites en France ? · Il a 15 ans ?

2

Est-ce que… ? (standard)

Add Est-ce que before any statement:
Est-ce que tu es français ? · Est-ce qu'il parle anglais ?
(Note: est-ce que + vowel → est-ce qu')

3

N'est-ce pas ? (tag question)

Add n'est-ce pas ? at the end when you expect "yes":
Tu es français, n'est-ce pas ?

💡 Answering: oui, non, SI

Oui = Yes (to a positive question): Tu es français ? — Oui, je suis français.

Non = No: Tu es anglais ? — Non, je ne suis pas anglais.

Si = Yes, contradicting a negative question: Tu n'es pas français ? — Si, je suis français !

💡 Key rule: Si only exists to contradict a negative. If the question is positive, always use oui.
