💡
Le concept — WH-question words

WH-questions use a question word (comment, quel, combien, qui…) to ask for specific information.

💡 Five WH-question words

1

Comment ? (How / What name)

Comment tu t'appelles ? (informal)
Comment vous appelez-vous ? (formal)

2

Quel(le)(s) ? (Which / What)

Agrees with the noun: Quel âge (m), Quelle nationalité (f), Quels pays (m.pl), Quelles langues (f.pl).

3

Combien de… ? (How many)

Combien de personnes y a-t-il dans ta famille ? Note the inversion y a-t-il and the -t- liaison.

4

Qui ? (Who)

Qui est-ce ? (Who is it?) — fixed expression.
Qui s'appelle Marie ? (Who is called Marie?)

5

Inversion (formal register)

Swap subject and verb: Quel âge as-tu ? · De quel pays viens-tu ? — You'll see this in L5 questions.

🔄 How inversion works

Inversion means swapping the subject pronoun and the verb. You saw it in two questions above — Quel âge as-tu ? and y a-t-il. Here is the pattern:

Statement Inversion question Note
Tu as 15 ans.Quel âge as-tu ?Verb–subject joined by hyphen
Il y a des personnes.Combien y a-t-il ?-t- inserted between two vowels
Vous vous appelez…Comment vous appelez-vous ?Formal register

At A1, you are not expected to produce inversion — but you need to recognise it when you read or hear it.

🗣 Which question form to use?

Form Register Example When to use
Intonation ↗Informal / spokenTu es français ?Friends, text messages
Est-ce que…NeutralEst-ce que tu es français ?Safe choice in any context
InversionFormal / writtenÊtes-vous français ?Exams, formal letters, news
💡 A1 strategy: Use est-ce que when you need to ask a yes/no question. Use intonation with friends. You do not need to produce inversion yet — just recognise it.
