L10 — Hobbies II : aimer + infinitif

Expressing likes and dislikes using aimer followed by an infinitive verb

🎯
By the end of this module, you will correctly say:

J'aime lire. · Elle n'aime pas cuisiner. · Nous adorons voyager. · Il déteste faire du sport.

🎯 A hobby can be expressed three ways

Why this matters: All three forms are correct French, but they are not interchangeable. J'aime la danse (the category) and J'aime danser (the activity) carry slightly different emphasis. This lesson focuses on the infinitive form — the most versatile at A1.

💡
Le concept — aimer + infinitif

When the activity is expressed as a verb action, use aimer + infinitive. The infinitive never changes — it stays in its base form.

💡 Talking about activities — three patterns

J'aime le tennis.→ I like tennis (the sport in general).aimer + le/la/les
Je fais du tennis.→ I play / I do tennis.faire + du/de la
J'aime jouer au tennis.→ I like playing tennis.aimer + infinitive
Mental model: LIKE the idea → aimer + le/la/les (L08) · DO the practice → faire + du/de la (L09) · LIKE the action → aimer + infinitive (this lesson).

💡 The structure

[Sujet] + [aimer conjugué] + [infinitif]
Je aime lire.
Elle n'aime pas cuisiner.
Nous adorons voyager.

💡 Degrees of liking

Positive (+ → ++)

aimer — to like
aimer bien — to quite like
adorer — to love

Negative (− → −−)

ne pas aimer — to not like
ne pas aimer du tout — to not like at all
détester — to hate

💡 Negation: Je n'aime pas lire. — The ne…pas wraps around the conjugated verb (aime), NOT around the infinitive.

📖 Part A — Some hobbies use faire de + nom

When the hobby is described as an activity (rather than a pure action), French often uses faire de + article + noun:

Nounfaire de + nounEnglish
le sportfaire du sportto do sport
la dansefaire de la danseto do dancing
la natationfaire de la natationto do swimming
la musiquefaire de la musiqueto do music
le vélofaire du véloto go cycling
la cuisinefaire de la cuisineto do cooking
💡 Rule: faire de + le → faire du  ·  faire de + la → faire de la  ·  faire de + les → faire des

📖 Part B — Three ways to say the same thing

All three structures are correct. They frame the hobby differently — recognition only at this stage.

StructureExampleFocus
aimer + infinitif ← this lesson J'aime danser. the action itself
aimer + nom J'aime la danse. the thing / concept
aimer + faire de + nom Hobbies I J'aime faire de la danse. the activity as practice
💡 All three are correct. You do not need to choose between them yet — just recognise that they exist. Production in this lesson stays with aimer + infinitif.

🔍 Meaning sensitivity — Notice the difference

All three sentences are correct French. But they feel slightly different. Can you notice the shift?

FrenchEnglishNuance
J'aime voyager. I like travelling. Active — the action itself
J'aime les voyages. I like travel (in general). General — the concept
J'aime faire des voyages. I like going on trips. Specific — the activity as practice
🤔 Reflect:
Which sounds more active?  →  J'aime voyager.
Which sounds more general?  →  J'aime les voyages.
Which sounds most like a regular habit?  →  J'aime faire des voyages.
💡 At A1 level, you only need to produce aimer + infinitif. But noticing these differences now will make the other structures feel natural later.
