Le concept — aller à + contractions

The verb aller (to go) is irregular. When followed by a place noun, à contracts with the article: à + le = au, à + les = aux. Feminine nouns keep à la.

💡 The contractions

à + le → au

Je vais au cinéma. (le cinéma)
Il va au parc. (le parc)

à + la → à la

Je vais à la piscine. (la piscine)
Elle va à la bibliothèque.

à + l' → à l'

Je vais à l'école. (l'école)
Il va à l'église.

⚠️ No contraction here — à and l' stay separate. There is no *al form.

à + les → aux

Nous allons aux magasins. (les magasins)
Ils vont aux toilettes.

💡 Special: en ville (to town/city) uses en with no article. Similarly: en vacances.
💡 Chez : For people and homes, use chez instead of à : chez le médecin, chez un ami, chez moi.
