Le concept — Regular -er verbs and modal verbs

Regular -er verbs all follow the same pattern. Vouloir (to want) and pouvoir (to be able to / can) are irregular but share a similar pattern.

💡 Regular -er verbs: the pattern

Stem + ending
aimer → aim-

■ green = stem (never changes)  ·  ■ red = ending (changes with subject)

jeaime
tuaimes
il/elleaime
nousaimons
vousaimez
ils/ellesaiment
💡 Note: je, il/elle and ils/elles endings sound the same (silent -e, -es, -ent). Only nous (-ons), vous (-ez) are clearly different.
🔊 Liaison: The silent endings become audible before a vowel. Compare: ils aiment (silent -ent) vs ils ont → "ilz ont" (liaison). This matters in natural speech — listen for it.

💡 Vouloir and pouvoir

Vouloir and pouvoir are both irregular but share the same stem pattern: veux/veux/veut/voulons/voulez/veulent and peux/peux/peut/pouvons/pouvez/peuvent. They are often followed by an infinitive: Je veux aller au cinéma. Je peux venir à 8h.
