Le concept — The five speech acts of a rendez-vous

Arranging a meet-up in French involves four core communicative functions: proposer, refuser, négocier (suggest an alternative after a refusal), and accepter. A fifth function, demander des précisions (ask for details once a plan is agreed), is introduced below and practised in the bonus.

💡 A sample dialogue

Alex
On se retrouve samedi soir ? proposer
Sam
Désolé, je suis occupé samedi. refuser
Alex
Et samedi matin alors ? négocier
Sam
D'accord ! On se retrouve à quelle heure ? demander des précisions
Alex
À dix heures ! accepter

📖 Proposer un rendez-vous

FrenchEnglishPattern
On se retrouve… ?Shall we meet up…?+ when or where
On peut se voir… ?Can we see each other…?+ when or where
Tu es libre… ?Are you free…?+ when
💡 Note : On se retrouve… and On peut se voir… are interchangeable. Always add a time or place: On se retrouve samedi soir ? · On peut se voir au café ?

📖 Refuser

FrenchEnglish
Désolé, je ne peux pas.Sorry, I can't.
Je suis occupé.I'm busy.
Non, je ne suis pas libre. No, I'm not free.
Ce n'est pas possible. It's not possible.
Je regrette, mais…I'm sorry, but…
💡 Note : Je suis occupé(e) = Je ne suis pas libre. Both mean "I'm not available."

📖 Négocier (after a refusal — propose an alternative)

FrenchEnglish
Et samedi matin alors ?What about Saturday morning then?
Plutôt dimanche ?Sunday instead?
On peut se retrouver plus tard ?Can we meet later?
💡 Note : Négocier is used specifically when the other person has said no. You propose a new time or place.

📖 Demander des précisions (once agreed — ask for details)

FrenchEnglish
On se retrouve à quelle heure ?What time shall we meet?
Ok, mais à quel moment ?OK, but at what time?
D'accord, mais avant ou après notre cours ?OK, but before or after our class?
💡 Note : Demander des précisions comes after agreement — you are asking for the details of the plan, not negotiating a new one.

📖 Accepter

FrenchEnglish
Oui, avec plaisir !Yes, with pleasure!
D'accord !Agreed! / OK!
Oui, je suis libre !Yes, I'm free!
Ça me convient.That suits me.
